Learning by copying

As I mentioned in my previous post, one of the things I’m doing to teach myself to draw and paint better is to copy some of my favorite art by some of my favorite artists.

The first artist that really motivated me to start painting again is Marisa Cummings, the artist behind Creative Thursday.

I was using acrylics in the first few paintings I did. But when I got to the following piece something inside me told me to give it a bit of my own self by doing it in watercolor.

And so I did…

I fell absolutely in love with this piece and it felt so good to put my own little spin on it just by changing which medium I was using.

It was like the clouds parted and the Hallelujah chorus began to sing. This is my medium.

I’ve gone on to do several others:

These were so much fun to paint! Now I’m working on copying some other artists that I love.

I’m currently working on copying some adorable paintings by Kit Chase of Trafalgar’s Square. Her stuff is so sweet and cute and I just am head-over-heels in love with it.

I’ll be back later this week to share the fun. 🙂
