I’m starting a new journey to become a children’s book illustrator. I’ll be chronicling my adventures here.
Stay tuned as lots more will be coming.
A little about me:
I’m 47 years old, divorced, two grown kiddos who are both married, I have two adorable grandchildren.
I homeschooled my kids and I loved every minute of it.
I am a late bloomer. I didn’t start making art until I was about 25 years old. Somehow I found out about the book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. I read it, did the exercises, and surprised the heck out of myself by actually learning how to draw (something I used to envy certain elementary friends for).
I started painting with watercolor shortly after. Basically teaching myself with books. (It was so long ago that I didn’t even have internet yet!)
Years passed and hear I am 22 years later with two grown kids and facing the second half of my life wondering what in the world I’m going to do that is meaningful and joyful and fun.
I love to look at children’s book illustrations. They make my heart so happy and bubbly. I want to be able to do that! I want to make gorgeous children’s illustrations that captivates young children and takes them into magical worlds.
And so here I am. I’m going to finally take my art dreams seriously and do the work I need to in order to become the artist I want to be.
I’m kind of starting from the beginning. I haven’t drawn much over the last two decades. Just here and there.
I just recently took up watercolor again and I am completely smitten with it.
I am self-educating. I wish so much that I could go to art school, especially since Montserrat College of Art is only about 20 minutes from me, but it’s way too expensive. So I’ll be learning from YouTube videos, books, and SVS – Society of Visual Storytelling. They have some amazing classes there – all illustration based.
I want to keep track of all that I’m learning, my progress, and all the ups and downs of making my art dreams come true.
If you want to know what it’s like to start from the very beginning and become a successful children’s book illustrator, then I would love for you to join me for this exciting journey!
Talk to you soon!
